About Telč

The story of Telč

Telč, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic, often feels like a storybook setting. Its historic center, particularly Zachariáš of Hradec Square, draws visitors with its perfectly preserved Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The town’s singular appeal comes from its triangular square, lined with pastel-colored burgher houses, each with distinctive gables and arcades.

Surrounded by a system of fishponds, Telč offers a quiet beauty that contrasts with the lively atmosphere of larger Czech cities. This small town, with a population of around 5,100, has maintained its medieval urban structure, earning its UNESCO designation in 1992 for its exceptional architectural and urban planning values. The reflections of the colorful houses in the still waters of the ponds add to the town's visual appeal.

History

From Gothic Fortress to Renaissance Splendor

Telč's origins trace back to the mid-14th century, with the earliest written mention dating to 1335. Originally, the town was fortified with a Gothic castle, Gothic houses, and a water defense system. However, a significant fire in 1530 destroyed much of the wooden structures on the main square.

This devastation paved the way for Telč's remarkable Renaissance transformation under the rule of Zachariáš of Hradec. Having studied in Italy, Zachariáš was inspired by Italian Renaissance art and architecture. Upon his return, he brought in Italian architects to rebuild the town and his castle in the Renaissance style. This period, in the mid-16th century, marked a golden age of prosperity for Telč. Zachariáš also established fish farms and opened a hospital and hospice, contributing to the town's flourishing economy.

The town's historic center, including the chateau and the unique triangular square, has been remarkably preserved since the 16th century. This preservation is partly due to the town experiencing no major changes for several centuries after the Thirty Years' War, when it was briefly occupied by the Swedes in 1645. The Jesuits later established a college and built the Church of the Name of Jesus in the 17th century. The town's cohesive and authentic architectural style, with its Renaissance and Baroque townhouses, led to its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Architectural Details and Enduring Legacy

The burgher houses on Zachariáš of Hradec Square are a testament to the Renaissance influence, featuring ornate facades, decorative gables, and arcades. Many are adorned with figural painting and Renaissance sgraffito. The Telč Chateau, originally a Gothic fortress, was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau and is considered a prime example of Moravian Renaissance architecture. Its interiors, including the Golden Hall with its carved coffered ceiling, display the influence of Italian art north of the Alps. The town's strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes between Bohemia, Moravia, and Austria also contributed to its historical significance and economic development.

What to see

Begin your exploration at Zachariáš of Hradec Square, the triangular heart of Telč, recognized for its pastel-colored Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses. Walk along the arcades, admiring the intricate facades and gables, each recounting a story of the town's prosperous past.

At the northern end of the square, discover the Telč Chateau. Originally a Gothic castle, it was transformed into a Renaissance residence. Take a guided tour to see its opulent interiors, including the Golden Hall with its remarkable carved ceiling, and the African Hall, featuring hunting trophies. The chateau's Renaissance garden offers a serene escape.

For expansive views of the town and its surrounding ponds, climb the lookout tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit or the tower of St. James Church. These churches are located in the heart of the town square.

Delve into the Telč Underground, a network of medieval tunnels and cellars beneath the main square. These passages, used for defense and storage, now offer an interactive exhibition on the town's history. Do not miss the Plague Column in the upper part of the square, erected in 1716.

Consider a walk around the system of fishponds that encircle the town for picturesque reflections of the chateau and houses.
